GPS Introduction

GPS (Global Positioning System) is a radio-based navigation system that provides information about the position coordinates, speed, and time to users around the world. The use of GPS satellite service not charged. Users only need the GPS receiver to be able to know the location coordinates. Accuracy depends on the location coordinates on the type of GPS receiver.

GPS consists of three parts, satellite that orbit the earth (GPS Satellites circumnavigate the earth 2x a day), control and monitoring stations on earth, and the GPS receiver (GPS equipment of the recipient). GPS satellite is managed by the United States. This is the tool of GPS receiver used by the user to view the coordinates for the position. In addition, GPS is also working to determine the time.

GPS satellites send out two signals, namely L1 frequency (1575.42 MHz) and L2 (1227.60 MHz). L1 signal is modulated signal with two pseudo-random code that is P (Protected) code and C / A (coarse / aquisition). L2 signal only carry a code P. Each satellite transmit a unique code so that the recipient (GPS Receiver) can identify the signals from each satellite. At the time of the feature "Anti-spoofing" is activated, the P code will be encrypted and then the code is known as P (Y) code, or Y. Position calculation is done with 2 way is to code C / A code and P (Y). GPS receiver calculates the distance between the GPS receiver with the satellite (pseudorange)

There are three types of GPS equipment. The first type is a GPS Navigation, GPS Navigation usually has an error rate below 10 m (average GPS error type has 3 to 6 meters), GPS Navigation Price range from Rp 750 thousand up to Rp 10 million-an). Second type is a type of single frequency GPS geodesy, GPS geodesy single frequency is usually used for mapping, the error rate below 1 m, this type of GPS geodesy sold millions around 20 -30. GPS last type is the type Geodetik GPS dual frequency, GPS has a high level of accuracy and the error rate below 1 cm. Dual frequency GPS geodesy is used to measure ground movement.

GPS navigation receiver type is enough for beginners. GPS receiver is the most inexpensive type of GPS receiver with bluetooth, the device is about $700 (Rp 700.000), and must have a PDA / Ponsel / Computer / Laptop with a bluetooth connection and software such as GarminXT, nusamap, mapking or nokiamap.

Handheld GPS such as GPSMap 76CSx is usually used for people who like fishing in the sea. Unfortunately GPSMap 76CSx tends to lose signal when under the tree / in the building. For the fisherman, this is not necessary because about in the middle of the sea, the sky did not have obstruction (except for being cloudy). Excellence GPSMap 76CSx is the ability to float in the water, this tool may be needed when accidentally fell into the sea.

User 4-wheel drive vehicles often need a guide way, especially in places that have never visited. Use the map is less practical and disrupt travel. For a general direction of the road used the Garmin nuvi is equipped with the city navigator.

Mountain climber / hobby of hunting in the forest can use Garmin etrex Vista HCx type or Garmin Rino 530 HCx. Garmin etrex Vista HCx with the sale price + / - S 385 (Rp 3,850,000) with a map in the memory free 256 MB micro sd. Garmin Rino 530 HCx comes with 2 way radio and can send and receive position Rino fellow users, the price of $460 (Rp 4,600,000). Code H indicates the high-sensitive tool, C means the color screen. X means that the code may be able to use this tool EXPANDABLE memory (micro SD memory). Both the tool is equipped with a gasket to protect the equipment from impact and water (IPX7). GPS equipment for buyers in Indonesia need to pay attention to its basemap, Basemap is used routeable Pacific Recreational basemap, not America Recreational

GPS is built in the phone such as Nokia N95 are usually less sensitive so that the satellite is required to lock a long time and should be done in a slightly open.

One of the problems for GPS users is less complete map, a map such as the original city navigator jasamarine have advantages in detail and the route. Map obtained free on the internet (eg from navigasi.net, note: on 17 August 2008, Bos Buyung et al release indonesian map that will be a more complete and routeable in www.navigasi.net) is usually less complete and does not routeable. GPS users need to pay around $70 - $100(Rp 700,000 - Rp 1,000,000) to buy the original map.

A Historical Perspective of Navigation

Navigation is the process of reading, and controlling the movement of a craft or vehicle from one place to another.[12] It is also the term of art used for the specialized knowledge used by navigators to perform navigation tasks. The word navigate is derived from the Latin "navigare", meaning "to sail". All navigational techniques involve locating the navigator's position compared to known locations or patterns. Terrestrial navigation has relied for millenniums on maps, signs, and the human sense of direction [1, 2]; it is only in recent times that radio signals have helped land navigation. The most important tools for navigation were created to ensure safety during maritime journeys. The first infrastructure created as a navigational aid was the lighthouse. The world’s first lighthouses were erected about 2,000 years ago: the Colossus on the Rhodes Island in Greece and Pharos at Alexandria in Egypt. It was not until the nineteenth century that the Fresnel lens
